A Survey of Residents of the Eastbridge Hospital, Canterbury

Nathan shares the results of his exhaustive study of the residents of Eastbridge Hospital, Canterbury.

The following transcripts are the culmination of a year’s work that I’ve undertaken at the Canterbury Archives – to do with residents who lived and died at The Eastbridge Hospital. I have acted with due attentiveness with my findings and have uncovered a number of interesting facts. Names were sourced from various notes from the Eastbridge Hospital Admissions’ Book. I was then able to use this information to help me in follow up investigations. My next port of call was the Find My Past website, where I’ve concentrated my efforts for the last six months. And so, there I was able to gain access to the numerous Census Records from the Canterbury area. The years cover the 1841 Census to the 1901 Census. The people I researched were transcribed from the Census Records – which I have noted diligently. All of the afore mentioned people had been patients at Eastbridge Hospital at one time or another, and some had died within its walls.

Eastbridge Hospital is an amazing place and its walls could probably tell some interesting stories and facts about our early history, concluding right up to the 1900s.

May I add that the process of research and examination of ‘old records’ has been a worthwhile experience and intrigued me, and thus, I look forward, in one way or another to do some added research on other individuals in another area of the UK in the future – if it is warranted.

Drawing shows Eastbridge hospital with three arched windows and 18th century figures in the street.

Closest relative, Niece, Sarah Enstone.

I noticed that ‘Almswoman’ cropped up a few times in my research. I never knew that a definition of it was to be a beggar. I presume Jane Sutton was suitably admitted to Eastbridge Hospital due to her dire straits she found herself in at the time; mainly petitioning on the streets. The era must have been very hard in the 1880’s and I presume it was very fortunate to gain admission into Eastbridge Hospital. The only alternative to being admitted to the Hospital would have been to enter a Victorian Work House or worse, to be left to die in the streets amongst the biting cold, and the various destitutes and vagabonds, who wandered the streets aimlessly and lost.

In the 1880’s…the only alternative to being admitted to the Hospital would have been to enter a Victorian Work House or worse, to be left to die in the streets.

The Work House in Canterbury was situated at Nunnery Fields, in the Old Dover Road. It was a large red-brick building, designed in a later gothic style. The employed inmates duties there were to make bread, partake in wood splitting and heavy gardening.

1881 Census. Resident Eastbridge Hospital. Occupation Rector. Daughter Marianne. Domestic Servant, Ms Emma Pierce, who was a resident of the Temple household.

Reverend Temple had a Court of probate in 1888. Leaving a sum of money to close relatives.

I have found the information about Reverend Temple rather fascinating. He seems to have had a significant involvement with Eastbridge Hospital in one form of another for a number of years. The work he undertook there, for the Church of England, must have been rewarding. Plus being a Rector he may well have conducted blessings and burial ceremonies for the Inmates and In-brothers and Out-sisters at Eastbridge Hospital.

Reverend Temple had a long life and lived to the ripe old age of 90, which was an achievement in them tough times of Victorian England. Consequently, he was a truly renowned figure in the local community.

I have found out with further research that Reverend William Temple was also a Master of Eastbridge Hospital for a number of years, and also was M.A. Rector of St Alphege, Church, Canterbury. Sadly I can find no pictures of him that I could have used.

John Denwood is another interesting character who resided at Eastbridge Hospital.

I have tried to find out if his children were at Eastbridge Hospital with him – but unfortunately, I could find no further records.

Elizabeth Dennis

Born 1812. Died 1888, Canterbury.

(I was unable to find anymore relevant information regarding this lady. Except she was an Inmate at Eastbridge Hospital in the last few years of her life.)

Harriet Grant

The following few individuals below, died before, and during the main Census of 1841, so for that reason, there is not too much information that I could take leads on. However, a number of them were resident at Eastbridge Hospital.

St. Alphege

Seeing that the place St. Alphege crops up a few times here – here is a brief history behind the actual named person who this part of Canterbury is named after.

St. Alphege was an 11th century Archbishop of Canterbury whom the attacking Vikings seized and held to ransom in 1011. He insisted no money be paid to them so the Vikings took him to London, where they ultimately murdered him during a drunken frenzy by throwing and raining down cow bones upon him. He was originally interred in St. Paul’s Cathedral, but then was transported to Canterbury Cathedral in 1023. He’s now buried near the high altar in the North of the Cathedral.

St. Alphege, an 11th century Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered by Vikings during a drunken frenzy, by raining down cow bones upon him.

Death Duty Registers, 1841. Pcc And County Courts, Wills and Probate at Eastbridge Hospital. Executor of Will, John Becks of Dover.

1841 Census. Resident Eastbridge Hospital. Status Patient.

Catherine seems to be in benefit of a sum of money, as there was a Will and Probate orchestrated in respect of Eastbridge Hospital. This may indicate she left some deeds or monies to the Hospital. In my research, Catherine is the only patient that I could find who had a Will and Probate record with some connection to Eastbridge.

Mary Smith

Born 1767. Died October 1849 at Eastbridge Hospital. Place of Burial, Canterbury, All Saints.

1841 Census. Resident St. Mary Bredin, Canterbury. Occupation Lawyer. Wife Cecila.

1851 Census. Resident St. Alphege Canterbury. Status Married. Occupation Lawyer. Wife’s profession, Laundress.

Charles Spice seemed like an absorbing individual. With his trade being lawyer, I can only assume he may well have been well paid. Nevertheless, it does make me wonder about the end of his life, and how he ended up in Eastbridge Hospital’s admissions. I can only assume he must have been in poor health towards the end of his life, so thus, found himself in the care of the hospital.

Thus I presume, Martha was in Eastbridge Hospital’s care right up until the day of her death.

And so, with Martha Terry – that concludes my research into Eastbridge Hospital’s history – and various fact-finding notes.

Date of completion of my work: 21/03/2017 for History of Place
