Phil has been taking part in painting classes at Stoke Mandeville hospital, reflecting on independent living. He explains how his picture associates two Stoke Mandeville residents who wanted to live together with a Chinese legend.
Maggie and Ken Davis were told it was impossible for them to live anywhere except in an institution. But 40 years ago today, they moved into the home they designed themselves. It marked the beginning of the Independent Living Movement.
Grove Road housing scheme was a groundbreaking development, opened in 1976 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, which enabled disabled people to live in society and not in an institution.
