Volunteers make first visit to London Metropolitan Archive

The group makes plans for research into London locations.

A small but select group of volunteers enjoyed an induction into the History of Place project at the London Metropolitan Archive.

Maureen Roberts, Senior Archivist, showed the team around the archive which houses everything from maps, records and reference books about London through time. The group discussed themes for research and even had a look at some material which had already been identified as being of interest to our project. These included photographs of St Saviour’s Church, Acton together with records and a book about Chiswick House and Gardens during its time as an asylum.

The volunteers were able to process their online applications for History Cards, so that they can carry out research at the archive at their own pace. The group will be sharing their ideas in the coming weeks and we look forward to them starting to uncover the stories of deaf and disabled people from our London locations.

We will be arranging a visit to the Wellcome Trust archive plus the Langdon Down Museum in the summer for further research.
